C-Note was a member of the Botany Boyz, who were part of the Screwed Up Click back in the 1990s. C-Note eventually went solo. “Third Coast Born” was his most successful individual outing and features a ton of Houston all-stars including Bun B, Lil Flip, and Fat Pat. “Mak’n Cash Forever” features Cresia, Big Moe, the Botany BGs and ESG. The beat was produced by Sean “Solo” Jemison, whose work is all over the landscape of Houston rap in the 90s.

L.E.$. and Party Boyz – Sweets

For a while now, DJ Mr Rogers has been bringing us music that reflects a lot of different aspects of Texas rap. LE$’s “Beautiful Struggle” is edgy, trunk rattling country rap tunes, while the Party Boyz have been doing, well, something else entirely. This track brings the Party Boyz to LE$’s side of the musical spectrum, a smokeout where nobody is dancing but everybody’s head is nodding. A place where the rillos are always rolled to perfection.

Classic album: Lil’ Boosie & Webbie-”Gangsta Muzik”

When I first heard this album I didn’t put it together that this was Lil Boosie from the Concentration Camp group until maybe a year later. I was first introduced to this album in 2004 while I was a freshman at Alabama A&M Univeristy. My roommate put me on this shit, he was from Mobile, AL and Boosie and Webbie had already made a name for themselves down there and were steadily spreading thoughout the rest of the South. I was selling mixtapes around that time and the records on this album landed on several mixtapes especially the standout cuts “Swerve”, “Gimme That”, “Baby Momma”, “Show Ya Tattoos”, and “Bad Bitch”. I also relied on “Get On Ya Shit” for motivation. Before you knew it Lil’ Boosie and Webbie were the kings of the SWAC (Southwest and Central: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee) states and you couldn’t go to the club in those states without the DJ goin at least 4 deep into this album. What was more impressive was that they did it independently. Classic country rap tunes, FREE LIL BOOSIE.

Rittz – After Mornin

One of the main questions I get on the streets about Yelawolf’s Trunk Muzik is “who’s that dope ass guy on the second verse of Box Chevy Pt. 3?”  His name is Rittz and he resides on the northside of Atlanta.  His rapid fire-melodic flow has garnered him much (deserved) attention.  I’ll start leaking joints off our upcoming tape White Jesus soon but before I do that I wanted to drop this gem from 2008.  And really, if you’re a rapper from the south and haven’t sample this at least once then you’re probably not actually from the south.

Mr. Ku – Born Threat

DOWNLOAD: Mr. Ku – Born Threat

Did you know I put lives in danger? Did you know that I was a born threat?”

Most may be unfamiliar with the name but if you lived in ATL around the time this record dropped you were definitely bumpin this.  Off Ku’s1996 offering Confeshun 2 Da Streetz, “Born Threat” finds the Decatur rep on the offensive.   Accepting his role as the villain, Ku spits tales of murder and mayhem with no remorse.

The self-produced beat is vintage a-town music -  hard drums, haunting piano keys with faint choir vocals in the distance and flutes! “Born Threat” is a perfect example of what I use to love about gangster music.  It was street but still had a compelling musical edge.  He’s not simply shouting out how real he was over a shitty instrumental.  G-shit if I’ve ever heard it.
