As a signee of UGK Records, Dub G has definitely been carrying the torch for the Kingz recently. His style is in the same country rap tunes vein as theirs, musicaly and lyrically. As the host and chief contributor of the Era of the Kingz mixtape, he delivers a worthy performance with the help of some great producers, such as Nesia Beatz. His tracks are the best part of this mixtape, partly because some of the songs are just straight throwbacks, making the whole project essentially a non-chronological compilation. Even if you’ve heard some of the tracks before, it’s definitely worth a listen to get a look at the future of UGK Records.
Here’s a song to cruise to on a Sunday afternoon. From 1997′s The Album of the Year, a Suave House compilation which features several other classic cuts from the likes of NOLA and Tela.
We’ve been keeping an eye out for Vallejo, CA’s Moe Green in the past couple of weeks, mainly since we heard “Ride”. After listening to his street album Rocky Maivia: Non-Title Match, it’s safe to say that it’s one of the summer’s standout releases. Although almost every song is made by a different producer, Moe accomplishes something that shouldn’t be taken lightly – keeping the album cohesive and tying all together with his raps. Instead of seeming all over the place, as often happens when an album has an ensemble cast of producers, Moe seems to have chosen the beats for their own vibe with the big picture in mind. The song “KIM”, like the album as a whole, is very smooth and personal. Do yourself a favor and download Rocky Maivia for free at the link below. Shout out to Dan at Audible Treats for sending this over.
Fresh, part of Team ECSTACY based in Athens, GA, just released his second mixtape, Speakerboxx & Nosebleedz today. Fresh is a great performer and one half of the duo J Skeezy and Fresh, whose single Bulldog Nation was just selected to be this year’s official UGA Football theme song (that means it will play every week to a stadium full of over 100,000 drunk, screaming football fans… whoah). “Do You Remember” is one of the mixtape’s more soulful cuts, with a beat by Team ECSTACY that laces some southern percussion with a sorrowful vocal sample. The end product rides. Check out Fresh’s entire mixtape at the link below.
The homie Grade A Muzik from over in Montgomery is a man who wears many hats. He’s probably best known as a producer, and a lot of people know him for his interviews. Scragg Lee is an alter ego of his, complete with a full, self-titled album. There’s no one type of sound that would describe this project. He falls somewhere between Beck and Rehab, mostly singing, occasionally rapping, and always musically interesting. Grade A Muzik produced, engineered, and mixed every track, so this is a truly personal project. The link for the full album is below. All props are due to Trill Montana for bringing this to the public.
