From Stunt N Dozier productions comes Zavey - Thinking Out Loud. We’ve posted some of Zavey’s music before to a warm response. The Texas native’s project is produced almost entirely by Stunt N Dozier, who you might know from their excellent work with L.E.$.. The production on Zavey’s mixtape is a little less traditional country rap tunes-oriented than on L.E.$’s, and for the most part the chances they take really pay off. A prime example would be the haunting flute sample in “Do What I Gotta Do”. That track succeeds because of the heavy bass and hypnotic, clean percussion which is different from how most producers would probably approach the same sample (ie loop it over “dusty” east-coast style drum breaks). The result on that track on many others is a fresh but distinctly southern sound. Zavey couldn’t ask for a better backdrop to introduce himself to the world, and he provides us with an extremely solid performance throughout the tape. He’s definitely a young guy still working to find his voice, but he’s got the natural rhythm and cleverness it takes to make a mixtape enjoyable from end to end.
