10 Rappers to Watch in 2010

In no particular order:

Yelawolf
After the release of Trunk Muzik on the first day of January, Yelawolf’s future in 2010 looks bright. People in Atlanta have been seeing Yelawolf rip the stage at a wide variety of shows for several years now. His insane live performances are part of what makes him one of rap’s most exciting up-and-coming artists. In 2010 we should see Yelawolf get more opportunities to headline shows and make guest appearances (the performance at the Raekwon show was a great start). His guest appearances on records should be dope too, if his verse on G-Side’s “Who’s Hood?” is any indication. Yelawolf is from a town called Gadsden in eastern Alabama and reps it faithfully on record. In fact, he seems to be at his best when he’s rapping about country life and where he’s from. Now he’s teamed up with Will Power of Supa Hot Beats whose dark, ultra-bass-heavy style is a great backdrop for the imagery in Yela’s rhymes. It looks like 2010 could become the Year of the Wolf.

Listen: Trunk Muzik

Rich Boy

A lot of fans gave credit to Polow da Don for the dopeness of Rich Boy’s self-titled debut, but Rich Boy’s music since then (without Polow) has definitely lived up to that level of quality. In 2009 Rich Boy dropped what might have been the hottest summer mixtape, Kool-Aid, Kush, & Konvertibles with DJ Scream. Most of the production was handled by Supa Villain, who showed a lot of versatility over the course of the tape. Rich Boy proved once again that when you get chemistry with one producer, you should make the most of it. If everything goes according to schedule, we should see the release of Buried Alive, his second studio album with Polow, early in 2010. Having a good ear for beats isn’t his only talent though. Rich Boy has the ability to murder tracks while making it look easy.

Listen: Send For Me / Put Me In the Game

Big Boi
It’s no secret that any project coming from Stankonia will generate excitement in the music world. Nobody hates on hype, though, when artists consistently live up to it. Sir Lucious L Leftfoot will most likely be the biggest rap album of 2010 and will probably be the best, too. The singles released so far were hands-down two of the best songs of 2009, and if the rest of the album lives up to that standard, it will be an undisputed classic. Big Boi has taken his time to perfect this album, and reports from listening parties have been nothing but positive. Let’s be honest, even a half-assed Big Boi album would probably still be one of the best of 2010. Luckily for us, the Dungeon Family doesn’t do half-assed.

Listen: For Your Sorrows / Shine Blockas

Jackie Chain
Jackie Chain started out 2009 on a hot streak with a bunch of guest appearances and a split mixtape with $hamrock. Kid Cudi even jumped on his song, “Rollin” and so it was heard by an all new audience. His pace slowed down after the summer but on Christmas Day he and DJ Ames (from the UK) released Instant Classic, a banger of a mixtape that wrapped up the year nicely for Rocket City’s native son. With his sense of humor and distinct delivery, a well-polished Jackie Chain studio album could definitely be a heavyweight contender in 2010.

Listen: Dodgin ft Yo Gotti

Playboy Tre
When was the last time you actually enjoyed skits on an album? For anyone who heard Playboy Tre’s last two street albums/mixtapes, they know that this guy has the ability to be hilarious and poignant at the same time. Even though Tre spends a lot of time shaking his head at the problems he sees around him, he’s the first to turn the looking glass inward and admit to all his flaws and vices. Teaming up with B.O.B. definitely hasn’t hurt him, even though their styles are very different. We’re looking forward to anything new from Playboy Tre, whether it’s music or YouTube videos.

Listen: Living In the Bottle ft Bohagon and Gil Scott

Max Minelli
With Lil Boosie doing time, Max Minelli will have a chance in 2010 to be the hottest rapper out of Baton Rouge. Even though he’s really different from Boosie, he does his city proud by being one of the rawest spitters in the South. You can always hear his hunger, and like all the rappers on this list, he chooses excellent production. Both those elements came together on Pain Medicine, his latest full-length album. If he stays hungry, Max Minelli has the potential to drop some of 2010’s best records.

Listen: Brain Distortion

Alley Boy
Alley Boy fits into the same mold as Gucci at first listen, but over the past year he’s been building his own lane. Case in point: he doesn’t have any catchy ad-libs in his raps, he just goes in the booth and lets the realness flow out. Few rappers in Atlanta can match Alley Boy’s from-the-gutter truthfulness and willingness to call out fakers. He has the power to flush out all the studio gangsta-ism and fruity swag in Atlanta right now. If he succeeds, you can bet that he’ll cement his place as a big name rapper on a large scale. Is the rest of America ready for this kind of brutal honesty? In 2010 we’ll find out.

Listen: Yean It ft Maceo

Big K.R.I.T.
Whenever a rapper comes out of smaller regional area in the south, they always draw comparisons to other rappers from that area. So far, Mississippi has David Banner as their claim to fame, but in 2010 Big KRIT could add a new dimension to people’s perceptions of the muddy water state. Big K.R.I.T. is like David Banner in that he produces and raps, but his style of rap is more smooth and pimpish than David Banner’s ever was. In 2009 we got The Last King, a really impressive mixtape that got our hopes up for the up-and-comer from Mississippi to do big things in 2010.

Listen: Hometown Hero

Juciy J and Project Pat
With three tight mixtapes in 2009, this duo is carrying the HCP torch for sure. Even though we won’t see them on Adventures in Hollyhood anymore, it may be for the best if we keep getting hit with quality country rap tunes from the Juiceman and Pat. They’re busy showing other rappers how to stay relevant despite being in the game for more than a decade. Most people thought that Three 6 had perfected their particular style a long time ago, but it’s a work in progress. It’s great to see artists who never stop trying to improve. With plenty of music lined up for 2010, we’ll be hearing a lot more from the Hypnotize Camp very soon.

Listen: Fye Fye Weed

All Star
One of the most prolific rappers of 2009, All Star has been hitting folks in the head with great music for a while now. 2010 could and should be a record year for Nashville’s finest. His style could be described as world-weary. You can feel the weight of his trials and tribulations in his flow and lyrics, which seem casual at first but have a much deeper layer of emotion beneath the surface. He’s managed to release a barrage of music while maintaining a level of quality most artists can’t maintain throughout a whole album. In 2010 All Star just might become your new favorite rapper.

Hey y’all, sorry for my lack of posts in recent months. I’ve been on the road networking and in and out of studios trying to make this Mick Vegas shit happen. I’m currently looking for a few young upstarts who would like to contribute to the site on a weekly basis. Must have extensive knowledge in the field of Country Rap Tunes and can write a coherent paragraph. Send writing samples to [email protected] if you’re interested.

Gangsta Pill & Gangsta Gibbs keep it gangsta on this gangsta ass record. Gangsta ass beat by the homie Ced. L Young and some gangsta ass scratchin. Gangsta.

DOWNLOAD: Alley Boy - Shiester / Freestyle / Money To Da Ceiling

Alley has really been stepping his game up in the last couple months. There’s something so brutally honest about his lyrics and delivery that he kinda reminds me of an Atlanta version of JT money. Shiester is produced by the legendary Slick B.
